Single camera drama

Task 1.

A single camera program is a program that has been filmed with only one camera throughout the whole program. There are many advantages of using one camera firstly it is cheaper as you don't need to use lots of film in many different cameras and also you don't need lots of cameras as you are only using one. It is also easier to edit as there

will only be one roll of film so you don't need to get bits from different bits of film and have to put them all together. Also their is no places that you cant film on the set as in multi camera formats

as you will not want to film in a place where there is a camera in the way unlike with a single camera where you are only filming with one.There are also advantages of using several cameras such asnot having to move the camera around like you would need to do during a single camera show. Also when editing it will be quicker as you can have people working on other pieces of film so more work can be done

Single camera techniques will mostly be used in films as there are many different shots required as you are limited to shots mostly mid shots ands

ups or long shots. Multi camera formats would mostly be found in shows

with a live audience such as comedy or talk show as then they can show you the crowds reaction if

something is funny.
Task 2
TV and radio shows that are called serials are shows which mainly follow main story arcs/ narratives throughout most or all of the series. A series is several episodes that run under the same title shows like Easterners coronation street and the inbetweeners can be classed as a series however Easterners and the inbetweeners can be class

ed as both a serial and a series. A single drama is a one of episode where all the story is toldso th

ere is no more episodes.

Task 3.

The T.V program Dallas uses cliffhangers to end to end severa

l episodes. There are many other shows that use cliffhangers as well so that people will watch the next episode lots of soaps use cliffhangers such as Eastenders Coronation street and Emadale they use this to keep people watching and so that the next episode flows better.

The three videos have different narrative structure and all use different and similar techniques,
The first narrative drama it follows a linear storyline. The black and white effect gives the audience the belief that the video is a flashback but throughout the video there is no part that shows it is a flashback. The story line follows a type of realism as the man is clearly lonely and in the end kills himself this shows the lengths people will go who are lonely.

Towards the end of the video when the man kills himself video do

esn't really follow the pattern of narratives like at the start of the video and the death can be classed as the climax of the video.The second video follows the same narrative as the firsthowever the narrative is a non linear pattern and uses subjective narration this is used to make the audience feel like they are in the video as well they can judge the man for them self's and not jump to any conclusions that he is the same as the man in the first video.

Loneliness is the theme of the video like the first one which is show through the different camera angles such as the tracking shots, point of viewshots and close ups to help the audience see what the character is feeling the video ends on a cliffhanger so that the audience will wonder what happens.

Task 4: Using the information below write or record a commentary or create a presentation on one of the following clips. Explain how the following are used to good effect

The video i watched was the La Valise i think this advert was very good as it looked very professional as all the clips were edited well and when they changed it was instantly and no gaps in-between. The video was good as it was very mysterious you with people referring to a suitcase as just the suitcase so you wonder what is in the suitcase also the person who seems to be the boss and wanting people to deliver the suitcase face is never showing so you wonder who it is. The effects on the video make it look very good as it comes from the view that someone is watching the person and following them. The lighting is very good as when the lighting is dark it makes the video look very mysterious and the lighting is very bright in the room with the boss this makes it look like the other people are being interrogated as the boss is mad about them loosing the suitcase also just before the video ends the boos leaves through a garage door as the door opens the sunlight comes through very bright and with the music that is being played it seems that the person is about to leave and start a new life. The music makes the video better as it fits in with what's happening as when the camera keeps switching from the person with the suitcase and the ninja when the music keep changing from a soft and calm to fast and intense as one person is walking and the other is running after the other person this makes you know that the person is being chased.

TASK 5 Watch the clip. What are some of the differences in technology available to modern audiences? With the advent of new media, why has it become more difficult to reach a broad target audience

Since television was first created it has changed hugely it seems a long time ago when there was only three channels now on subscription services like Sky and Virgin where there are hundreds and hundreds of channels which has made it a lot harder for companies to reach a very large audience when advertising on TV. As when there was only three

channels a there would be a lot more people watching one channel than nower days because the choice has increased so much. When there was only three channels each channel could get 10 to 20 million viewers so they can reach a larger audience now to reach those kind of audiences they would need to advertise on about ten channels.

Changes in technology has affected this as well as because of the Internet, mobile phones, and computers people can watch TV where ever they are on the intern

et or if they buy DVDs so they wont watch TV as much.

TV channels cannot make as much money of advertising and no

w rely on other ways to make more money like subscription fees on Sky and Virgin making shows available to watch online for a fee sometimes and selling the show as DVD boxsets. Since the media has expanded I think it is a good thing as channels might have lost ratings but TV is more available to people and there is a lot wider choice.

ll use i movie to first import our clips and we can use it to edit our clips so we can change parts of it that we don't like. We will use i tunes to covert and import music that we will be using in our film and also we can store sound clips if we choose to use. We will
use the program Audacity to edit the sound on our film as we
can change the pitch and volume of voices if they aren't clear on the original film. We will be using the program garage band to add and edit sound clips in o
ur film we can also use it to mix music.We will be using a variety of different equipment to fil
m our film we will be using a DVX-100-b camera this will be one of the best cameras that we can use as it has a good sound quality and picture qualit
y this will make our film to a more professional standard and to a higher quality. We will use a tripod also so that the camera will be steady and if there is a point in our film where there is no one to film then we can stand it up and film.

For my single camera drama i think i did achieve my purpose as the task was to create a single camera drama and that is what i did i think our drama is quite good but there are some parts i would like to have been better.

For my drama i got three piece of feedback the first said it was good they liked the music as they said "It was fitting with the story" as well the editing fitted with the shots of them people dancing and the lighting changed it made the place look like what the people would be feeling like. It needed some improvements as at one point a clip was cut too shot so you couldn't see the person run off.

The second piece of feed back was positive again as they said it was a good piece of work with a clear plot so you know what's going on it could do with some more speaking though as you cannot tell what some people are saying very well at some points.

The final piece of feedback was positive and negative they liked the video up to the point where two people are at the top of a hill as because there isn't much talking you don't understand straight away that they are fighting and after one of them has fallen over the other just walks off.

In our film we didn't give any major positive or negative messages but some people could think we gave out negative messages about drugs after seeing what happened to one of the characters.

Our video only stared males as we were in a small group and we got some help from friends.

We only had one ethnic group.

The music tracks we had in our film helped as they fit what was happening at different stages of the film.

The locations were important for our video as we needed somewhere that the main character would be able to run of into ands this wouldn't have been possible on the streets.

The language wasn't very important for our target audience but it fit the fill ok.

i think our video did look realistic as we had good effects on the film so people could see what it would be like to be the main character.

When editing our film we did realise that some of the vices were a bit quiet so we had to just make sure that we had speaking at the main points that we needed it so people would know what was going on. We didn't cut of anyones voices.

The camera work was fine in our film only in a couple of points were there things in the way or the camera was shacking which we didn't know about at the time.

The people that have watched our film haven't been board and have said there was enough content to fill the advert so people are interested throughout.

We didn't need to use an external mic.

Our editing is good and i think it makes the film better as the transitions look better than just the shots skipping to another.

The titles we used were appropriate fonts as they made the video look more like a film.

i think in this type of genre there isn't that much that you would expect to see if it was a video showing the bad sides of drugs you would expect to see negative effect on someone and maybe something happen to they which is what happened in our film.

In a professional film i think the things that would be the same would basically be the main plot some friends have some pills have a good time but then the bad effects kick in and one goes missing.

A professional company would have advantages over us as they would have better equipment , locations a bigger budget so they could hire more people to be in the film and better editing software.

The main narrative in our film was equilibrium and disruption as at the start everything is ok but after they have the drugs the disruption starts when the person runs off but it is never resolved as he is just left there.

i would regard our film as single strand.

i didn't learn any new skills making this film.

I think i did well i think my acting was ok at some points but at other it needed improving i think i was also a good team member as i took an equal part in all tasks.

I was prepared to listen to others opinions as it would benefit the group.

if i was to make another film like this in the future i would plan it better as we didn't have as many clips as we would like when editing.

Media industry

Task 1: How have advantages in technology effected the TV industry and how have audiances changed as a result?
Now that most people own Sky or Virgin or another version of digital TV not there isn't as much choice on analog to watch there is just the main channels from BBC1 to channel 5 these channels are available for any one who on a standard T.V set. Now that a lot of TV sets come with built in free-view there is more choices for people to watch TV at home who don't have digital TV. Free-view is a way to watch more TV channels at home there are around 40 channels on Free-View they are all free to watch since some TVs come with Free-View built in you don't need any thing else to watch them but for TVs with out built in free-view you need a box to receive the channels. The main Free-view providers are Free-sat and free-view. Satellite TV is a way to watch TV at home by receiving the channels via satellite the main provider in the U.K is Sky satellite TV is becoming more and more popular this is mainly because there is such a large choice of channels available to watch there are around 750 channels to watch on sky TV with main channels with set programing genre's with several channels just for sports, movies, music and children's TV instead of having to watch whatever is on one of the five analog TV channels you can use the built in TV guide on Sky to see what is on on every channel and you can see all the program listing for the next week also sky are using new technology to get more customers the have the option of Sky plus witch allows you to record shows straight to you sky box so no need for tapes and also rewind pause and fast forward live t.v there are also many HD T.V channels so that if you have a HD t.V you can get a better picture and there newest technology is Sky 3D which allows people with a 3D T.V to watch programs in 3D. In the U.K there are currently 61,838,154 people living in the U.K and 9,956,000 households have sky T.V this works out at around 15% of the total population have 15% seams quite small but many house hold will have more than one sky box so the noumber of people that watch sky tv will be much higher. With all analog TV signal being replaced by new digital signal more and more new TVs have built in free view so it has already started to replace the old analog signals but it will not be fully replaced until everywhere in the U.K has the new digital signal set up this is expected to be completed in 2012 this will be a benefit for people with who now only have Channel's one to five as they will be able to receive free view channels with a strong signal so they will have a larger choice of channels to watch and a much better picture and signal. Now in the U.K large T.V providers such as Sky and virgin have a Plus box witch allows you to record TV shows and watch them at a time that suits you also you can pause rewind and and fast forward live TV this is very good for busy families as if they are busy and miss a TV show they want to watch they can record it and watch it later also if people cant decide what to watch on TV they can watch one show and record two others there is also the option to record a whole series by pressing one button another benefit so that you will know that you wont miss your favorite show and then you don't need to buy the box set if you miss a few episodes of a show. In the UK Sky and Virgin have the option of a plus box to record shows but the technology was created first in America by TIVO.




When watching T.V people can interact with the TV show from there living room in many different ways mainly on digital services with the Red button as o
n some shows if it is a competition style show as you can vote to evict people or vote for who you want to win you can do this by just pressing a few buttons on your remote. There is other ways of interacting with other TV channels such as music channels
witch you can ring or text in to request songs that you want also on other channels like shopping channels you can ring in to the show live so that you can buy things that they are selling on the show. Another way you can interact with TV shows is to phone in you can then ask a question you can also E-mail in or join debates online.





People can watch TV online in several different ways the main ways are on demand services offered by several main TV channels such as BBC iplayer 4 OD ITV net-player and Sky player these services allow people to watch a wide range of programs online most of the sites are free except the Sky player witch you need to pay for or have a sky subscription. The BBC iplayer has the largest program library and you can also watch the BBC iplayer on so
me mobile phones these websites are becoming more and more popular as it is like having Sky plus on your computer as if there is a program you want to watch or if you have missed a show you wanted to watch they you can watch it whenever you want. Another reason that these websites are becoming more and more popular is that as it is on your computer is you have a laptop you can watch the shows were ever you want even if your not at home.

n demand services such as the BBC iplayer and 4OD but some of the services like Sky player do charge to watch TV online there is also ways to watch TV online illegally by downloading or streaming TV show online this is a way that technology is changing the media as lots of people would rather watch TV illegally that pay for it even if it is illegal and takes some time. When watching TV online most of it is free on some websites but it does cost as you are using your own internet so even if you are watching TV on a free website it will still be costing you money.

e option to purchase shows by the episode there is also a way to purchase TV shows on programs such as Itunes as there is a large library of TV shows series and Films to choose from there is a very large selection of TV shows to choose from and most are not to expensive





TV viewing figures have gone down quite considerably compared to those of ten to twenty years ago. Now some of the shows that get the biggest viewing figures are shows like the x factor and strictly come dancing these get around ten million people watching them every week but about 20 years ago if there was a popular or big TV show on the figures could be trebled.
There are a few reasons for this mainly it is that there are much more TV channels available as before big channel providers like SKY and Virgin there would have only been the five anoloug channels to watch but now there are hundreds of specifit channels so people have a huge choice of what to watch. Another reason is that people can now watch TV online weather it be legal or ilegal there are many sites to watch lots of TV on and most are free so people will want to watch a show for for online rather than pay for it





You can access a huge range of films through digital tv as there are many film channels and on sky and virgin they have there own movies which you can purchase. There
are specific move channels like sky movies an film four which cost to reieve but also there are channels like sky box office which you can buy new movies which aren't available on film channels.





The Internet is something that can benefit the film industry as you can buy films on websites like itunes at a small fee or you can buy them f lots of shopping websites w
hich will make the film industry a lot of money from sales of DVDs and blue ray movies but the from all this money that film companies will be making they will be losing even more from millions of people watching or downloading films illegally for free this will be seriously affecting the industry as the more people that watch films illegallythe more they will loose and if everyboy did it they wouldnt make any money at all. And with new technologies like 3D animations and special effects the films will be costing more money to prouce so they will need to make more money by selling more films.

Sky TV is one of the biggest TV companies in the UK it is the largest digital TV provider as it reaches around 9,000,000 (wikipedia dec 2010) it provides custom

ers with TV internet and home phone there are nearly 900 TV channels and 200 radio channels there are many different types if channels to watch there are entertainment channels movies sports news documentaries and more specific TV channels like food channels arts channels and a DIY channel and gaming channels.

Sky TV uses is very advanced with the technology that it uses and is one of the top players for digital TV in the UK they have the most channels available to viewers one of the technologies that they use but what isn't that new now is HD TV sky has the most

HD channels available in the UK this was very important when it first came out and is now as lots of people spend lots of money on new HD TV's and they will want to be able to get the best picture they can so with the more channels people would choose sky.

Another technology they use is sky plus which was another big deal

as you can record live TV shows straight to your box and no need for videos this is good as you can record several live tv shows whilst watching another and you can record full series of shows so you dont need to worry if you have forgoten to record a show.

The newes technology that sky is using is 3D channels sky has the only specific 3D channel in the U.K although not every TV show is available in 3D it is mainl sports and movies that are available these are very popular as when sky first started showing TV in 3d it was just sport in pubs which gets lots of people watching an now more and more shows will start to be available in 3D wich willl get sky more customers.

Task 3: How is the TV industry funded and how does this effect programing? (Include a breakdown of British TV- who are the main players?)

Most T.V channels are funded the same way by adverts but the only channels that are not funded by adverts are the BBC channels. This is because we pay a T.V license fee every year which is the only funding the BBC gets. this license cost £

145.50 for a color T.V and £49.00 for a black and white (TVlicenseing.co.uk).

The reason we pay this fee every year is because the bbc doesn't show adverts as they are not allowed also it is so viewers can watch TV without being interrupted.

Another reason we pay a TV license is so that the BBC will make programs that we want to watch as because they have a certain income every year they can take more risks with programs that other channels than relay on adverts would not be able to in fear of it

failing and them loosing money. The bbc needs to offer people different types of programs that they want to see and they do this mainly on the four channels that they have on bbc one and two it is mainly the most popular programs and the ones that they think will get lots of viewers this is mainly because these are the only two channels that everyone with TV will be able to watch bbc three is mainly for the younger audience and has a lot of comedy programs on the channel some of the programs on bbc are not made by the bbc like Family guy and American dad these show are only on bbc three as lots of people who watch one and two would not like them.

BBC four sows lots of factual programs and documentaries and mainly older people watch this channel the bbc uses these channels to try new programs that might be a bit risky to put on the thirst two channels but lots of times programs that started on these channels end up on bbc one and two.

It is not just TV that the license pays for also the radio is covered there are are bbc radio stations 1,2,3,4,5,6,7, these are similar to the Tv channels as every station w

ill have a specific genre of music that they will play or a specific type of program that they will play.

Also the license pays for the BBC iplayer on the website this is another way to give the audiance what they want as they will be able to watch any program wherever they are.

Because of the license fee the bbc needs to be impartial on there news programs this is because they are not owned by anyone who wants there views to be put acro

ss also the bbc has lots of news on specific subject on the website and they have local news stations which air after the main news so people all around the country can find out news about there area.

Because of the constant income the BBC will get every year they can take risks on shows that people haven't done before as channels that need advertising will try to make the same type of shows all they time on ITV there are lots of reality shows like X factor, Im a celebrity get me out of here, Dancing on ice these are on a lot and there are oth

er shows like them as some of them have famous people on them and people will like watching famous people and the x factor people will start to like the people that go far in the show and will watch it week in week out.

So they know that shows like these work and will try to reproduce them all the time as x factor gets around 7 million viewers every week so they can charge a lot for adverts when it is on so they would want these figures every week. Also ITV have invested a lot

of money in sports like football cricket rugby and boxing as these will get a lot of viewers for football they show lots of england games which will get millions of viewers they also show lots of champions league games which will get many viewers as people will like to watch some of the best teams play.

ITV is also getting more viewers by stopping shows which less companies want to advertise in like children's TV shows as children have less money so wont be buyin

g many products only relay toys and they will have to get their parents to buy them also with digital TV on providers like SKY and Virgin they have between 50 to 100 specific Kids TV channels like nickelodeon and the disney channel these channels have kids shows on all the time so kids will have a much wider range of shows to watch because of this ITV show older programs mostly repeats like The BIll and Midsummer Murders and many other crime and investigation shows these are shows that more people will like and will have a greater target audience also people will like to watch them as they are not made any more these are mostly showed on ITV 3 and 4 as these channels wont get as many viewers and ITV 1 and 2 so showing more popular shows.

Mainstream and independent film companies can be very similar but very different as mainstream are big hollywood film companies and companies can only be called mainstream if they are in hollywood and independent are all the rest of the film companies that aren't in hollywood these can range from big companies with huge budgets that make lots of films with well known actors in them to small low budget companies which people don't realy know about. Some of the big mainstream film companies are Warner brothers Dream works 20th century fox have made some of the most profitable films like Harry potter series and shrek these will cost a lot of money to produce as Harry potter and the half blood prince cost warner brothers over $250,000,000 to make but because the companies can afford to invest so much money in big films for actors special effects this appeals to people and makes them want to see the film harry potter and the half blood prince made over $

933,000,000 for warner brothers this is good for the big companies as the more they spend to produce the films most of the time they make a lot more nearly always double the money they spent and even treble but for smaller independent companies they cant afford to spend as much and might not make as much.

Independent film companies don't need to be very small companies with less than ten people working there some of the big independent film companies are Film four and lions-gate these don't have the biggest budgets but have made some very good films like 127 hours and four lions these haven't had the biggest budgets but four lions has made a lot of money for film four and 127 hours is expected to make a lot more. There isn't too much differen

ce between mainstream and independent as mainstream are the big billion dolor companies only from hollywood and independent are all the other companies ranging from size to where they are in the world.

Bollywood is a well known part of film which has been around since the first silent feature film was made in india in 1913 by Dabasaheb Phalke which became a huge success.

In the 1930s the industry became very popular and there was over 200 films

being made every year at this time the films were not called bollywood but were very similar to bollywood films.

The term Bollywood was created in the 1970's after a Bombay-based film industry took over a Bengali film industry called Tollygunge which was nicknamed Tollywood.

The golden Age of Bollywood film was from the late 1940's to the 1960s with some very successful films being made a lot of films were based on working class people in india which made them popular as people could relate to the films.

Lots of the modern Bollywood films try to appeal to a broad target audience and are even shown in other countries and after lots have been shown in England some films have been nominated for a BAFTA for best foreign film.

Hollywood is where nearly all of the major films are made some of the biggest film companies like Walt Disney 20th century fox sony pictures and Universal studios are all based in Hollywood. These are the biggest film companies in the world and have many d

In the U.K film companies are not as big as the main ones in the U.S but many still make lots of popular films some of the major film companies in the U.K are film four which have produced some multi million pound hit movies including Borat Four lions and 127 hour all have made hundreds of millions of pounds world wide and have made film four regard

ed as one of the best English film companies. There are many other British film companies but not all have made as many films as film four there are a lot of smaller film companies which films don't reach the same audience as some of the bigger companies but many smaller companies have lots of films nominated for awards including the BAFTAS .

The British film company was a private company set up by the labour

government in 2000 and was it was created to develop and promote the British film industry the company was shut down in 2010 during its time the British film company funded more the £160 million to over 900 films throughout its ten years existence.

The company helped smaller films reach bigger audiences in many different ways £2 million was was distributed a year to produce extra posters and adverts advertising non main stream films £15 million was funded to support emerging talent also money was f

unded to cinemas to make upgrades and refurbishments for new screens and equipment and to improver access for wheelchairs and other new technology for people with hearing and sight impairments.

Since the council was shut down may famous actors have campaigned to keep the council including Clint Eastwood and James McAvoy

But the company has remind closed down.

Since the council was shut down many films will suffer as the council helped fund smaller independent films as big companies wouldn't need the money so many films may not go into production as they haven't got enough money also other cinemas will not

get funding for new technology to improve cinema viewing. Because of the council shutting down the film industry will be affected as it will be harder for as many people to see non mainstream films and smaller cinema companies will not be able to get new equipment and technology so only the big companies will be able to afford it.

Task 5: Ownership and control- Does it matter who owns the media?

The big six media conglomerates are six of the biggest media companies in the world they consist of General Electric, Walt Disney, Newscorp, Time Warner, Viacom and CBS.

Theese six companies are some of the biggest companies in the world not just in media as in 2009 the eash made tens of billions of dollers with General Electric macking the most will $157 billion dollers.

General Electric is a huge media company with products an companies in all forms of the media including TV film the internet magazines and many more.

T.V is where the company has most of its assets as they own over 50 world wide television centres mainly in the U.S but have lots in Europe and south America. Including the whole of the NBC network, CNBC, syfy and Bravo.

They aso own 80% of NBC films and many other film companies including Universal pictures Shady acres and Rougue pictures.

Walt Disney is the second largest company mostly macking its money in film but does own many Tv stations and online companies aswell as a several theme parks. Walt Disney owns over 50 film production companies with many underthe walt disney name they produce mainly childrens films but also films for many other ages.

The company owns all of the ABC t.v company aswell as Espn americas largest sports channel and the disney network.

News corp is a large company that has los of smaller companies throughout

the media industry Mailny the own Fox one of the largets T.V networks in america from thisn they own fox news fox sports and lots of other smaller channels they also own the national geographic channel.

They own over 150 types of publishing including books, newspapers, magazines.

In many countries including The U.K Australia and the U.S.

they also make films with Fox films and 20th centuary fox.

Time warner is a company that makes most of its money in film and magazines with big film companies like Warner bros and and newline cinemar they halp dist

ribut films to over 125 countries and they also own more than 150 magazines with at least one magazine in every genra.

Another way f making money for time warner is AOL an online E-mail and internet service with millions of users.

Viacom is a company that mianly deals with television the company owns 10 television stations in the U.S but alsoown many T.V channels in the us and uk including comedy central nickalodeon mtv and vh1 these tv channels are the companies main way of macking moneyas lots of the main names have othe smaller channels magazines or radio stations.

MTv is probobly the most watched channel as it is broadcasted to over 160 countrys with at the mst of ten other mtv channels also been broadcasted world wide mtv raio and mtv magazine.

Management jobs.

Floor manager.

•A floor managers jobs is to over see all the set take make sure everything is running smoothly and going to plan they are very important in TV and film mainly more in film as a lot of the time they have a lot larger area to manage and sets are sometimes a lot more busy as there are a lot more departments and people to manage and oversee. In studio settings the floor manager is the link between the director in the gallery and the floor below. He floor manager is responsible for passing on information on to presenters and guests to ensure timings are met and the broadcast goes smoothly.

The average salary for a floor manager in the media industry is varied as it will mainly depend on what company you working for and what is being filmed experience is also a big part.

The most well paying jobs are the smash hit blockbuster films which can have several floor managers the average wage is usually between £30,000 -£90,000

Production manager.

Production Managers organize the business, finance and employment issues in TV and film. They are in charge of ensuring that the budget is well spent and everything runs smoothly through production.

Before shooting starts production managers would need to.

· Meeting the producer and other senior production staff to examine scripts or program ideas.

· Drawing up a shooting schedule and estimating cost.

· Hiring crews and contractors, and negotiating rates of pay.

· Negotiating costs and approving the booking of resources, equipment and suppliers.

During filming production managers are responsible for.

· Making sure that the production runs to schedule, and rep

orting to the producer on progress.

· Managing the production schedule and budget.

· Managing the production team.

· making sure that insurance, health and safety rules, copyright laws and union agreements are followed.

To become a production manager there are no specific qualifications needed but it is helpful to have most employers would rather have experience in some kind of TV and film work or in management.

Creative jobs.

Art director.

•An art director is someone who is the project manager for one of the biggest department of film the art department. They are responsible for ensuring that the production designers vision is carried out onto the set. They are responsible for the art department budget and schedule of work, and help the production designer to maximize the money alloca

ted to the department. Art directors don’t work on every set and most of the time are requested by the production designer. Many Art Directors work on television dramas and commercials, as well as on films. The hours are long and the job can involve long periods working away from home. Art Directors work on a freelance basis.

•Art directors usually start work 4 to 5 months before shooting begins as it can be hard to find all the relevant artwork needed for shooting.

•On some films art directors may need to travel around the world as they may need a certain piece of art for a scene as other people working in the art department may not know what it is so the art director will want the right piece.

•After all the art has been found for he set the art director doesn’t have as much to do while filming. During filming art directors continue to oversee the construction and the dismantling of the set after shooting has finished art directors must ensure that all sets and locations are cleared and that all outstanding art department bills are paid.

•The average salary of a art director is between £21,000 and £50,000 lots of the jobs that pay around the bottom end of the scale are for smaller production companies and the jobs that pay £50,000 are for the big budget films that take a lot longer to film. Most Art director jobs work on a fixed term contract usually between 6 to 12 months depending on how big the film is.

Writer.

Writers are some of the most important people in the TV and film industry as for anything with a script at least one writer is needed and usually there is a team of writers.

Writers are involved in the creation and or development of all types of creative writing for TV and film.

There isn't that many jobs that writers do as they have a very important job in writing the script the script is the most important part of a TV show or film as if it isn't very good the TV show or film will reflect that and people may not like it.

Some writers work as script doctors whose job it is to edit or fix a script at short notice when shooting is close because the director may not like the previous script

written.

A lot of writers work as freelance as it is only a temporary job being a writer and when they have finished the script they will finish working on that project.

There isn't an average pay for screen writers it depends on how long they are working for and how big the film budget is the biggest films pay the most money lots of writers also have bonuses written into there contracts and if the film is really successful they will get paid a lot more money.

A writers job can be very different when they work on different TV sho

ws or films as they could be working on a horror film for several months and when that film is finished they they could move on to doing something completely different like writing a serious drama for TV. Lots of writers stick to what they are best atif a writer is quite funny and good at writing humorous material they may only work on comedy shows.

And if they were good at writing a horror story they will just work on horror films.

Editorial jobs.

Editing is a vital part of the media industry especially in film as when filming is finished the film will be a long way of what they final product will look like.

Editing is used for a lot of thing from cutting the time down between frames so that the film is a lot smoother and looks better to creating the multi million pound specials effects there is a lot of work in the editing Dept.

The Editing dept is one of the most competitive part of the media industry to find a job as it has some of the highest paying jobs especially in the film industry.

Some of the jobs in the editorial dept are.

Editor.

An editors main job is to put the final touches to a film this doesn’t mean that there is little work for them to do as they have to take all the different scenes of a film and make the into the final piece editors need to share the vision of the director so they get the right mood for a film.

Editors need to work closely with sound editors and musical directors so that they get the music at the right time of the film and have the right ambiance and music beds.

Special effects are another very important part of editing these are used a lot more on big budget films as the best special effects cost millions of pounds if a film production has spent a lot of money on special effects they will want someone who knows what they are doing so they make the film to the be quality possible.

Job hours are very long for editors and nearly always involve sitting at a desk on a computer some parts of the work can be dull as after being in the job a while there will be a lot of things that are repetitive and boring.

It is also hard to find work as an editor is you have just graduated as lots of film companies and all of the big film production companies will want the people who can prove how good they are by other films that they have worked on and have lots of experience. Lots of the time young editors work for big name editors for not a lot of money so that that can make a name for them self and get some vital experience in the industry. For people who want to work indep

endent they will need to be working in the industry for 4-10 years so they can develop the right connections and training and so they can save some money so they can buy there own equipment.

Lots of editors either work for a film company on a fixed term contract or work as a freelance as lots of the big companies want people who they have worked with and proven there skills and smaller companies get freelance so they can save money. The average pay for an editor in the film industry Is between £15,000 and £50,000 editors are also paid bonuses if the film does well sometimes up to £5,000

Sound editor.

A sound editor is the person whose job it is to create the sound track to a TV show or film by cutting down and synchronizing music to fit the picture. They work closely with the sound designer, re-recording mixer and the director to establish what sound effects are required throughout the production and to ensure that these effects are available from sound effect libraries. Or that they can be production requirements within tight time schedules. A sound editors job can be long hours mostly sitting ant a desk on a computer but other times can be in other places sometimes the sound editor might have to create a new piece of music for a particular scene so they will have to go to a recording studio to oversee a recording session to make sure that the piece of music is right and is what they are looking for.

A sound editor must be good with computers and all modern software

and have a good working knowledge of sound recording, playback, editing and mixing equipment. Like a lot of jobs in the editing dept in media it is hard to find a job if you don’t have any experience because lots of film and TV companies want people who they have previously worked with or who have a reputation for working on big name films or hit TV shows.

The average pay for a sound editor is between £15,00 (usually for very small productions) and £30,000

ny or freelance lots more people work for fixed term contracts as when one film or TV show is completed there is nearly always going to be work available straight away.

Technical jobs.

The media industry is mainly about creative jobs but there are lots of important technical jobs from people like software engineers who’s job it is to make sure every thing is running fine with out these people the quality of TV and film would suffer.

Technical director.

The technical director is usually the most senior technical person within a theatrical company or television studio.

A Technical Director for a specific production is responsible for working closely with the scenic designer and director. It is their responsibility to determine how the scenery will be built and out of what materials.

The average salary for a technical director is between £36,000 and £60,000

To be a technical director there are no necessary qualifications but having a qualification or experience in management can help a lot.

Research jobs.

Research is a important part in the media industry for many reasons more in TV more than film as for specific TV shows they will need to know all the relevant information needed especially for news shows.

Researcher.

Researchers work across all genres of television production, including news, sport, current affairs, documentaries and factual programs, light entertainment, children's, situation

comedies, soaps or serial dramas, and one-off dramas. They are needed so that the presenters know all the relevant information needed to make a successful show hey originate or develop program ideas, drawing on their knowledge and understanding of industry requirements, and present their findings to decision makers they also brief readers for any new information that they didn’t know.

There are no requirements for this job but experience often depends who gets the best jobs.

Task 7: You are a special guest on a radio program and you are on the show as a industry specialist choose a specific job role that you are interested in persuing in the future and reserch the role. Interview screenwriter

The job of a screen writer is to mainly just to write the screen plays for movies or television shows.

They can write for the whole movie or television show or just for specific parts if they specialize in a specific part of the show. Many screenwriters work as part of a team sometimes up to twenty people in the team at a time or sometimes individual lots of

times screenwriters have to re write there work as directors might have a problem with one of the characters or they might just want dome of the lines to be changed some screen writers choose to work as script doctors whose job it is to come in and edit parts of the script if the director has a problem with this most of the time script doctors get double the pay or the screenwriter who has already done the job before as directors want there film or tv show to be exactly how they want it.

to be a screenwriter it is not always necessary to have training most of the time the bigger companies would want somebody to have some qualifications because they

want the best people working on there films but for a lot of smaller companies they arnt really bothered about qualifications and training as they want people for there skills and abilities.

For lots of the big films people get the screenwriting jobs based on their reputation as the film studios will hire people who they have already worked with on other films or who have done good work in other big hits.

The biggest responsibility in my job is the write the script and to make it t

he best that i can as if i dont put much effort in then the film quality will suffer and if the doctor dosent like my work he may hire a script doctor to re do my work also if i dont work well it will be harder for me to find another job.

in my job there is not to many problems that i have to solve as i am just writing but the main problem is when i need to change my work if the director doset like my work they will ask for me to change it another problem is when i am hired to fix a script usually there is ant a great amount of time to finnish they script so i sometimes have to rush and the end result may not be as good as it could be.

Task 8: Explaine some of the different types of jobs and contracts that are being advertised currently at the BBC explain the ntion of confidentuality and exclusivity agreements and provide reletive examples.

On the BBC website there are many different types of jobs ranging from producers to software engineers to business analyst. All the jobs being advertised are different as all have different roles and responsibilities even is two jobs sound the same they can be very different because of the contracts or working hours that go with the job. Some of the jobs being advertised on the BBC website are broadcast journalist category manager and apprenticeships there are many different jobs available.Some jobs are voluntary these jobs are only available so that people who get they jobs gain experience in the job role if they are young and have never done and work like it before.

The BBc has many jobs that have fixed term contracts these are contracts where the amount of time you will work has been agreed before you start work many of these contracts are six or twelve months.

These contracts are usually on jobs working on a TV or radio program because when they have finished the program they will have no need for the person any more.

There are also Freelance job contracts available there are not as many freelance jobs available as usualy the same people will do them as people who work as freelance are self-employed.

The work offered as freelance is quite small and not very good pay.

On some of the jobs being offered by the BBC they have confidentiality and exclusivity agreements these are only on the jobs where people will be working on new TV or radio programs.

A confidentiality agreement is an agreement between the BBC and people working on new programs for them so that the people working on the program cant tell anybody else about the pr

ogram so that nobody else creates a similar program.

An exclusivity agreement is a agreement between the BBC and a production company if the BBC agrees to buy a new program of a production company the will agree to sign an exclusivity agreement so that the production company cant go and sell the same program to a different TV channel.

Task 9.

Risk assessment.

A risk assessment is important when undertaking a piece of practical work as there c

an be risk involved.

When filming outside there can be many risks for example if you are filming on the side of a road you have to be aware of traffic on the road as it is dangerous and you need to make sure you stay of to road. Other risks could be if you are filming something with could involve smocking you would need to be careful with the lighter as it is a flame and this is dangerous as somebody could bet burnt or if the lighter is misused it could blow up and if somebody is holding it or is near it when it happ

ened they could get hurt as bits of plastic and metal would be flying out. A risk assessment shows that you know what all the risks are when you are doing some practical work and you know how to prevent them and so that nobody gets hurt and it also shows that you will know what to do if something goes wrong.

Task 10.

Employment Equality (Age) Regulations Act 2006.

This legislations means was designed so that nobody in the media industry ould be discriminated due to their age and people would not be judged because of their age. This act was superseded by the Equality act of 2010. Recently the BBC has been accused of breaching this act as they have sacked Miriam O'reily from the show Countryfile because she was too old. Shortly after she was sacked she was replaced with a younger female presenter following this she sued the BBC claiming she was the vicim of ageism and this act had been broken she was susessful in her claim.

Employers liability.

This Act mean that employers are responsable for there empoyes health and saftey an need t make sure that they are coverd incase anything happens to them. Employers are responsable if and of there staff has an injury at work ar contracts an illlness that was from something at work if anything does happen to a employee at work wich is the falt of the employer or place of work then the employer will have to pay compensation.

Employee rights.

Employee right is designed to show what people should expect when at work a lot of this is about pay what employees should get and how much is a minimum wage if over 21 the minimum age is £5.93 as well as pay for when an employee is sick and holiday pay. In the media industry most jobs are paid at minimum wage as so many people would want the job so employees do not need pay too much this is only for the loer jobs as top jobs can earn several times as much as other people. Also in the meia industry all employees sign a contract to state how long they will be working for how much pay they get ho many weeks of they can take for holidays and how much they will be paid for it and how much sick pay they will get if ill.

Beloning to a trade union.

A trade union is a group of people who work in the same industry members pay a fee to join and the union is there to help them if they have any problems at work this could include wanting a pay rise or having their pay cut or anting more holidays. Trade unions help employees as they know the industry very well as you join the union that represents your place of work and if you do have a problem they will fight for you sometimes agreements canot be made so strikes happen wich is where the members of a union vote weather to strike and people dont go to work until their demands are met.

Intellectual Property copyright.

Intellectual Property copyright is a company that protects ideas that people have this can inclue lots of things but is mainly music, art, broadcasts and recordings it is mainly relate to articals in newspapers and on the internet as people can copy other peoples work and claim it is theres and somthing has to be recorded to be officialy copyrighted. The most famus case of intellectual propertu copyright would be between Simon Cowell and Simon Fuller as Fuller claims Cowell stole his idea of "POP Idol" saying he has come up with the idea wich cowellhas turned into a huge sucess with shows including " American idol" and the "X-Factor" macking cowell millions of pounds.

Trademarks.

Atrade mark is a mark following a logo or company name wich is there so that peopleknow what it is for and just that so that no other company can coppy it to steel customers and avertisment from the other company a company has to register for the traemark so it will official be the property of that company and nobody else can use it.
